In Morden Cemetery
Opened in 1891, Battersea New Cemetery (as Morden Cemetery was then called) was a solution by the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea to the lack of burial space. To relieve pressure on the churchyards, Battersea Cemetery was opened in 1860 just to the north of Wandsworth Common, but it was soon realised that this would be insufficient in the future and so Battersea New Cemetery was brought into use some thirty years later. Large parts of the cemetery are left as flower meadows as here are found some of London’s finest old meadows. Among the plants to be found are green-winged orchid at their only remaining location in Greater London. One of the flower meadows is just across the other side of the path to the left.
