Wish You Were Here at the start of the Middle Roy
The Middle Roy is a classic grade 4 section of river, as the channel enters a rocky gorge contrasting strongly with the open Upper river. The first obstacle is this waterfall, known to kayakers as "Wish You Were Here" (although at least one guidebook has it confused with "Rooster Tail" on the Upper Roy). This has an awkward lead in and can be a rocky bounce down at low water levels, or have powerful hydraulics with more water. One has to land in control, as fast water leads quickly right and then powerfully left into the main channel. Many paddlers choose to put in just below it, even though there are harder rapids in the gorge, as it is a bit intimidating for a warm-up drop and it's never good to start a trip with a swim.
