Iron Gatepost on the Great Orme
Iron Gatepost on the Great Orme
This gate post is part of the gate seen at SH7583 : Iron Gate on the Great Orme . The cast name is 'W H Peake L pool', and a check of the census returns shows that William H Peake, formerly of Birmingham, was working as an Iron Founder in Liverpool between at least 1841 and 1861. After William's death (1864?) his widow continued running the business with her son, also WH Peake. William junior probably died in 1876, and then, in 1881, the son Thomas Peake was also recorded as an Iron founder. Thomas probably died in 1886, so the business name 'W H Peake' may have died out then if not before. This all suggests that the gatepost is at least 100 years old, and could be much older.
