Houghton Mill youth hostel opened in 1934 and closed in 1982. The seventeenth-century mill was leased from the National Trust. This photo was taken on 16th August, 1977. It was a most interesting building, if creaky, and even in those days there was a smoking ban throughout. Indeed, back in 1936, provision to reduce the fire risk included extinguishers and a Davey Lifeline in the upper of two dormitories!
