SN1137 : Part of Castell Mawr

taken 5 years ago, near to Crosswell, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Great Britain

Part of Castell Mawr
Part of Castell Mawr
The Coflein reads : 'Castell Mawr is generally considered to be a later prehistoric settlement enclosure, possibly of two phases, although it has been suggested that it is an earlier ritual or ceremonial henge enclosure re-used in the Iron Age. The site was subject to partial geophysical survey in 1988. In support of the henge theory flints have been found within the enclosure. A tanged iron spearhead was also found in the field to the south. Further site survey, geophysical prospection and excavation at the site in 2012 by Prof. Mike Parker-Pearson (of TV fame) was linked to the possible Neolithic origins of the hillfort/henge and ongoing work at Craig Rhosyfelin quarry (NPRN 416247)'.

So it started life as a henge and was subject to re-use in later periods.

It has further been suggested that this site was a forerunner of Stonehenge with some of the stones utilised here hoiked out and taken to Wiltshire. Who knows?

Interesting.
