Corpach Railway Station
The Corpach Railway Station unmanned now and all boarded. As secondary school Kids we used to walk across the Blàr Mòr from Lochaber High School to Banavie Station but in the winter time we would just carry on walking as far as Corpach Station so that we might get some shelter inside a closed waiting room as we waited to go home to Arisaig on the evening train. The main Station Master at that time from 1973 to 1976 was a kind gentleman called Allan MacDonald. There were others but he was the only guy that would let you get ten minutes in front of his coal fire to warm up before you had to go back out to the waiting room. Due to regulations no one was allowed inside his wee room. In return for his kindness we used to help sweep out the waiting room and some nights we would give him a hand to shunt some of the rock fill hoppers "Ballast" trucks that used to get filled by lorries from the Banavie Quarry. You did this by sliding a long iron bar that had a heel welded onto it about six inches from the end. You slid the bar under one of the wheels and pushed down as hard as you could and off it would go a foot at a time. Poor Allan had a bad limp and was nearing on retirement so he was grateful of our help too.
