Old ammunition store, Charcoal Burners Road, Savernake (3)
A view of the old ammo store facing north-west. Its appearance belies its considerable historical importance. It would have played its part in the build-up to the D-Day landings of June 1944. Wiltshire has long had military significance and this is true to this day. While obtaining this image I was able to hear the sound of artillery fire from Salisbury Plain about 30 kilometres to the south-west. For a perspective on the part north-east Wiltshire played in the second world war please see this site LinkExternal link (has sound at first).
