Craigmillar Castle and Doocot
Craigmillar Castle was initially a tower house that still forms the core of the castle. This was constructed around 1400. In the 1440s the curtain wall that surrounds the tower house on three sides and creates the inner courtyard was added. In about 1510 a further layer of enclosure, erecting outer walls to form the outer yard and east and west gardens was built. Further extensions were added along the east side in the 1550s and to the west side in the 1660s. A doocot tower was built in the northeast outer wall and can be seen here, behind the bush.
