Former An Óige Youth Hostel and one-time Railway Station at Loo Bridge, Co Kerry
A wonderfully atmospheric place to stay the night. Loo Bridge Youth Hostel opened in 1965 and was last used in 1998. This was a former railway station on the Headford Junction – Kenmare branch of the Great Southern and Western Railway. The railway service closed on New Year’s Day, 1959 (though traffic beforehand had been extremely sparse) and An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel Association, took over shortly afterwards. The facility was closed by the time this shot was taken in July, 2002. Kindly contact if you have memories of old An Óige hostels.
