Bergerie Farm sign, Beaulieu Estate
Bergerie Farm is on the lane between St Leonards and East End. It is on the site of the Bergerie grange, a medieval holding of the Cistercian abbey at Beaulieu. The main source of Abbey revenue was wool, and the sheep operations were centred on the grange at Bergerie. The word "Bergerie" is French for "shepherd's dwelling" or "sheep-fold", the Cistercian monks had come to Beaulieu from Normandy.
