NZ1864 : Remains of Lemington Staiths, Lemington Gut
Rather than being a part of the coal staiths this structure was probably a pier of the wooden foot-bridge which crossed Lemington Gut to a portion of land that used to be on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne known as Lemington Point. The large meander of the River Tyne was cut off to form Lemington Gut after the river course was straightened by the Tyne Improvement Commissioners in 1876. The bridge provided access to the Munitions works at Lemington Point during the First World War. The 1952 1:2,500 OS Map records both staiths and the nearby footbridge as 'disused'. The footbridge is shown in a Francis Frith photograph dated c.1950.
