Winged soul on 18th century gravestone; St Cyrus
Symbols of immortality such as this winged soul are common on Scottish gravestones from the 18th century. This is in the ancient Nether Kirkyard below the cliffs at St Cyrus.
The winged soul, or cherub, was intended to represent the soul leaving the body at the time of death and ascending to await the day of judgement when the body would rise to join it. Those not found wanting would then be received directly into heaven.
