Gravestone with winged hour glass; St Mary of the Storms, Cowie
Symbols of mortality and immortality are common on Scottish gravestones of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The hour glass, which would have been well known to the people of the time, represents the passing of time and man's mortality.
Occasionally the hour glass appears in winged form, as here at St Mary of the Storms, Cowie, and was then intended to represent Eternity and the afterlife.
