This house was first built in 1553 to be the home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. It was gutted by bombing in 1941 and restored in the late 1950's. In 1971 the house and surrounding estate and gardens were sold to the joint ownership of Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council. The gardens surrounding the house are grade 1 listed.
