These are the well-preserved ruins of the oldest fortified manor house in England, built of red sandstone by Robert Burnell c.1284, in the reign of Edward I. He was the Bishop of bath and wells and the chaplain and secretary to Edward I and also Lord Chancellor. There is a 40 ft. tower at each of the four corners.
