NJ1448 : The hearth and former centre of household activity

taken 10 years ago, 4 km from Dallas, Moray, Great Britain

The hearth and former centre of household activity.
The hearth and former centre of household activity.
A typical croft hearth. Here peat or logs would be burned. The iron framework was called the "crane" and on it hung the pots, kettles or ovens. The rectangular recess to the left of the hearth was a warm and dry "hole in the wall" for matches, tobacco etc.
