NJ4662 : Reindeer Club Moss (Cladonia rangifera)

Reindeer Club Moss (Cladonia rangifera)
Reindeer Club Moss (Cladonia rangifera)
This isn't a moss at all, but a lichen, and it is so named because it is eaten by reindeer in winter when food is scarce. It is close to the southern limit of its range here in Moray - and there are no reindeer around.
