SN0840 : Motte: Castell Nanhyfer

taken 5 years ago, near to Nevern, Pembrokeshire/Sir Benfro, Great Britain

Motte: Castell Nanhyfer
Motte: Castell Nanhyfer
The motte is at the north-western corner of the bailey, and is topped with a circular stone tower. The work on the site by the community, the National Park and Durham University archaeologists has transformed what was once an overgrown and inaccessible place into a lovely amenity for walkers and picnickers, and has made its historic context more understandable. As constructed, the castle stood on a tree-less prominence, high and threatening above the ancient church.
