Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)
Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)
A summer visitor to and breeder in Britain the Common Whitethroat suffered a dramatic crash in numbers as a result of drought in the western Sahel region of Africa in 1968 where it 'refuels' at oases on its migration to tropical and Southern Africa. Although numbers have still not fully recovered there are signs that it has bounced back and it is a delight to see them in scrubland and among our hedgerows.
