A typical salmon fly rod used on the Spey is some 15 feet long and a rule of thumb says that when the water temperature is low, use a big fly. The opposite applies if the water temperature is high. In reality there are no hard and fast rules and all too many times it is he who angles under the banner of "Ignorance is bliss" who proves successful - especially in salmon fishing!
