Sunny Clough
Sunny Clough
Looking over Ramsbottom from Sunny Clough clearly shown in foreground, towards Holcombe Hill topped by Peel Tower, which commemorates Robert Peel, former MP for Bury who, as Home Secretary created the first police force and policemen, who were known colloquially as "Peelers" or "Bobbies" The following information was kindly supplied by - John Tomlinson and is also repeated in the posting. The feature on the left middle distance now covered by houses is a moraine. Ice probably filled what is now the Irwell Valley and left this terminal moraine. The river has cut a deep ravine through this material as it masks the solid geography.
The Tower was built to celebrate Peel's reform of the Corn Laws which provided cheaper wheat for bread and so helped the ordinary workers.
