Started in 1746 when press gangs were still the favoured method of recruitment, the Royal Navy Hospital, Haslar was the largest brick building in the world when it accepted its first patients 1753. A report in the Daily Telegraph 13 April 2007 states the hospital is to close in April 2007.

The Isle of Wight hovercraft in the Solent is a sharp contrast to the wooden ships built at the time of the hospital.
