These wetlands have been created to help offset the loss of habitat following the construction of the Cardiff Bay barrier.

It is perhaps ironic that land originally drained, first by the Romans and then by monks of the 12th and 13th Centuries, which was some of the most fertile and productive in the country, has now been flooded once again, although this time mostly to permanent freshwater marsh as opposed to inter-tidal brackish and salt marsh.
