Churches little and large
The tower of St Stephen's Church looms over the somewhat smaller St Vincent's Episcopal Church in Howe Street. It is said that the pendulum of St Stephen's clock is the longest in Europe, at 65 feet 9 inches. St Stephen's was designed by William Playfair as a square set diagonally to fit into this awkward, sloping site at the foot of Howe Street. It is now used as an arts venue, but St Vincent's still functions as a church.
