In the Lady Chapel is the remarkable life-size statue of George Byron Bettesworth (1785-1808), a captain in the Royal Navy, and the second son of John Bettesworth of Caerhayes. Capt. Bettesworth had a brief but brave and distinguished career receiving no less than 24 wounds in the process, possibly a record! He possessed a letter from Lord Nelson stating that Bettesworth was the only officer in the navy who had more wounds than himself! He was killed in action at the Battle of Alveen in 1808 aged 23, and his body buried at Howick, Northumberland in the vault of the Grey family. LinkExternal link
