Towards Loch Maberry Castle
Towards Loch Maberry Castle
Looking across Loch Maberry on a fine July morning towards the remains of the castle on the large island, which lies in the next square. The castle walls, 2 metres thick, encircle the island from the water's edge. A causeway still provides a link with the other island in the photo and the shore but is not visible with such high water levels. The site may date back to the Dark Ages and, according to local knowledge, monks from Glenluce Abbey brought lepers here.
