Royal Shrovetide Football goal posts old and new, Clifton
Royal Shrovetide Football goal posts old and new, Clifton
These goal posts play a part in Asbourne's ancient football game where there is no limit to the number of players and the goals are 3 miles apart on the banks of the River Henmore! It is played over two days, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. One goal post is at the site of Sturston Mill and the other, shown here, is where Clifton Mill used to stand. The teams are known as the Up'Ards (those born north of the River) and the Down'Ards (those born south of the River).
The newer, smaller striking post to the right of the picture, is now used as the scoring goal for the Down'Ards. A ball is "goaled" when the post has been struck three times by a player standing in the river.
There is a good Wiki entry for this ancient custom. LinkExternal link
