Lumbutts Mill
Lumbutts Mill
The watermill at Lumbutts was converted from corn to cotton in 1783 and greatly extended in the 1830s to take on weaving as well as spinning. The tower designed by William Fairbairn housed first two then three overshot waterwheels one above the other to provide enough power for all the mill's machinery, with the water falling 90 feet and generating approximately 54 horsepower. The tower and chimney are now all that remains of the mill which closed in 1926.
