Reading was clearly an important activity for the Browne family. The collection of books in the library and scattered throughout the house is thought to be unique. Many books are thought to be the only copies of the original publications to survive. There are books on cookery, gardening, history, medicine, law and religion dating back to 1555, as well as popular ballad and story books. These were well used and highly appreciated, many being carefully bound in leather by William Jackson Browne, a nephew of the penultimate George. Even sets of magazines were leather bound, as well as handwriting books of the daughters of the family.
