A340 heads north from Bath Road Roundabout
Prior to the Theale Bypass being built to the south of the town, the A4 (Bath Road) travelled straight through it. So many pubs and coaching inns existed in Theale due to the major trunk road, that it was known in some quarters as 'The Ale'. Nowadays the old A4 west of here is called The Green whilst the A340 still heads north towards Pangbourne. The road's arrow straight course resulted from realignment of several local roads by the nearby Englefield Estate during the 19th C.
