Reredos detail in the Lady Chapel.
The church was built in various stages between 1160 and 1475 - The base of the stair turret is 11th-12th century. The tower, chancel, nave and font is 12th century. In the 13th century the chancel was extended and the transepts, south nave aisle and north chancel aisle were added. In the late 13th century the freestanding guild chapel was built. St Thomas’s chapel and the south transept chapel were built in the 14th century and the font was re-cut. During the 15th century the tower was heightened, a spire, new windows, arcades, clerestory, porch and north and south chancel aisles were added. In the late 15th century the guild chapel was extended into the nave.
The Reformation and later (16th - 18th centuries) saw the destruction of the medieval fittings - basic upkeep. Internal reorganization came about in 1827 with Victorian restoration in 1870-87.
