South Crystal skylight, New Mathematical Institute, Oxford
The crystal is a skylight from the basement concourse to the light well. As well as being functional and decorative the geometric design has a mathematical basis - a maths department internal webpage by C Macdonald says the design is "based on a Laplacian eigenmode of the opening in the floor".
New Mathematical Institute, Oxford
The New Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford is in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter. It was designed by Rafael Viñoly with completion in autumn 2013. The central section contains a common room with views to the Radcliffe Observatory, and being low allows views from the Radcliffe Infermary courtyard to the observatory tower. The building contains various mathematically based features, notably the "crystal" glazed internal roof of light wells, and Penrose paving outside the main entrance.
