Norman arches, Chichester Cathedral
These three storeys of an arched door with two arched windows above are a classic example of Norman Romanesque architecture. Each exhibits the semicircular arch, and the door has some typical simple geometric carving around it.
This semicircular arch is absolutely typical of the Romanesque period (c.1066 - c.1180) after which the pointed arch of the three great Gothic periods took over. Semicircular arches returned to some degree during the Classical Renaissance period (e.g. Wren, Hawksmoor) but this was nearly 500 years later.
Semicircular arches are also sometimes found from the Anglo-Saxon period that immediately preceded the Normans, but these tended to be more for internal arches such as that between the nave and chancel. Arched windows from the Saxon period tended to be much narrower than the ones seen here.
