TQ1011 : Cobden Farm

Cobden Farm
Cobden Farm
The name has evolved from Coppa's Dene the small sheltered valley it lies in. The farm existed from around the late medieval period until the Second World War when it was requisitioned by the military and used for bombing practice much like other farms in the vicinity, see TQ0710 : Lee Farm, TQ0809 : Site of Northdown Farm and TQ0610 : Site of Coombe Log Farm. After the war only the Lee Farm was rebuilt, Coombe Log and Northdown disappeared whilst Cobden's remaining buildings survived but were unused until 1984 when it became home to Southdown Gun Club. The club is still going today having been reinvigorated a few years ago by a members takeover to the extent that it has played host to major national and international clay pigeon shooting championships. Sunday is a competition day and on this date there was a competition involving shooters from Sussex, Surrey and Kent. The club use both the immediate area around the farm as well as a number of fields and a small coombe to the west, see TQ0911 : Southdown Gun Club. At the southern end of the trees are what appears to be a number of cherry pickers which I assume are also part of the club.

Beyond the farm is Blackpatch Hill with Clapham Wood in the distance on the left and the sea visible on the far horizon.
