SZ7799 : Concrete plugs

Concrete plugs
Concrete plugs
These large discs of concrete with the remnants of iron chains embedded into their centres resemble enormous sink plugs. They are obviously in place to stabilise the bank and reduce erosion, but whether they were actually made for this purpose (in which case why the huge chains ?) - or if they had a former use (in which case what ?) I don't know.
... one possible former use that comes to mind is that they may have been anchors for such things as buoys. If anyone knows the answer, I'd be most interested to hear.
