Former quarry
Former quarry
Long ago, before the first-edition OS map was published (c.1860), this was a quarry. Since then, it has become overgrown with trees, and it is also considerable wetter and muddier.

This is a view eastwards along the low ground of the quarry; see NS3878 : Former quarry and NS3878 : Former quarry for views north and south, respectively, from here.
Black Castle
Black Castle is the local name for a large quarry, long disused, and now greatly overgrown, that is located beside the south-eastern extremity of Carman Reservoir.
