Although the rocks look grey in the photo, they are in reality a pure white, which shows more clearly on those rare days when the sun shines. I was grateful just to get a view below the glowering clouds.

The whole of the summit area of Stob Ban, and just the summit of Beinn a'Chlaidheimh (on the right of the picture) is made from this Lower Cambrian Quartzite, formally part of the Loch Eriboll Sandstone group, deposited on a shallow shelf sea to a remarkably constant thickness of 160m throughout the outcrop. The quartzite is unusually pure, accounting for its colour, and where more accessible, has been considered for use in the production of glass.

These remarkably unfolded Cambrian sediments lie unconformably over the Precambrian basement of Torridonian sandstone and Lewisian Gneiss, which, though much distorted, had been eroded to a flat surface of notable uniformity before the later deposition. These basement rocks form the darker crags of other nearby and more distant peaks such as An Tealach, seen in the distance to the north.
