The well-tended crest on top of the hotel, overlooking the cathedral.

It is now known as Abode Exeter but was until recently the Royal Clarence Hotel - so called after two visits from the Duchess of Clarence (later Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV, 1792-1849). Other famous names to have dropped by include composer Franz Liszt and national hero Sir Horatio Nelson, who was granted the Freedom of Exeter after the Battle of the Nile (1798). The former Exeter Bank, next door, has also been added to the premises and is now Michael Caine's café.
