Hinemihi, Clandon Park
Central to the operation of a Maori community is the meeting house (whare*) in which meetings for local people are held along with ceremonies relating to births, deaths and marriages and other celebrations are held.† A whare embodies the 'spirit' of an ancestor and in the case of Hinemihi the persona is of Hinemihi, a female tribal leader from around one-thousand years ago.† Hinemihi originally came from the village of Te Wairoa, near Rotorua on New Zealandís North Island.† Today she still watches over her people and her presence is reflected in the carvings on and inside the whare. The two vertical carvings on each side are her legs, the edges to the roof are her arms outstretched in welcome and the lowest carving at the apex her head, and hence she still watches over and embraces her people. Within the whare are other carvings in the same vein. Refer to picture TQ0451 : Pou Tahu, Clandon Park for more details.†* Note : by convention 'whare' should always be written in lower case.
