Robinson's Shaft - South Crofty
Robinson's Shaft - South Crofty
A view of the Harvey's of Hayle crab winch (geared sideways); used for over 100 years and later converted to compressed air when the steam raising boilers went. This winch setup was used for hauling machinery down the shaft and rope changing. I think this engine spent some time roofless but has now been conserved.

The connecting between the steam engine and the drum is called a worm drive.
