Oughtershaw Beck put-in
Oughtershaw Beck is a typical Yorkshire spate-beck. If your timing is fortuitously good, you get to paddle, but it comes up and drops off inside a couple of hours, so we were really only expecting to paddle the Upper Wharfe (from Beckermonds to Hubberholme). A look at the confluence showed that Greenfield Beck (which we'd caught on a previous occasion) was not yet up, but Oughtershaw Beck was looking good, so we hurried up to Oughtershaw and unloaded boats into the entrance to the track to Nethergill and Swarthgill, just where the road pulls away up the hillside. There's limited parking here, so we shuttled the cars down to Beckermonds (fortunately we had one person who had decided not to paddle, so we were able to avoid leaving a vehicle here at all, ideal form the landowner s point of view).

It's not unlikely that one could put on further up - there was certainly enough water - but the walk-in is one factor counting against this, as is the livestock fence right across the river just above this waterfall (seen at the bottom of the nearest telegraph pole in this photo). The gradient steepens at this point, and the most worthwhile section of paddling lies between here and Beckermonds. On this occasion, by the time we reached there, the level was falling off quickly, though by then Greenfield Beck (SD8580 : Unexpected drop on Greenfield Beck) had come up and the Wharfe was good to go...

Oughtershaw Beck continues with SD8781 : Oughtershaw Beck rapids in the woods before running on into the Wharfe SD8780 : Ledge drop on the Upper Wharfe (a different trip). The video taken on the same trip can also be seen on youtube LinkExternal link.
