Grand Union Canal: Wolverton Aqueduct embankment
Grand Union Canal: Wolverton Aqueduct embankment
The lowest point between the Tring and Braunston summits of the canal was the crossing of the River Great Ouse. As originally built in 1800 this required four or five locks for the canal to descend to the valley floor before rising again through a further four or five locks to return to natural ground level. These locks were rapidly bypassed as by 1805 this embankment and the aqueduct had been constructed.

This is the view looking north-westwards from the Old Wolverton end of the aqueduct. The narrowing of the canal here has slots in either bank allowing stop planks to be inserted if required to isolate the aqueduct from the rest of the canal if necessary for maintenance without the need to drain all the water out of the long pound between the locks at Cosgrove and Fenny Stratford.
