Winchester Cathedral, West Window
Winchester Cathedral, West Window
During the civil war following the fall of Winchester Oliver Cromwell's troops occupied the cathedral and set about destroying all the 'papist idols' including al the stained glass windows. Following the restoration of the monarchy the shards of glass were collected and used to replace the West Window, however as it was impossible to recreate the original panes the result is a totally random design. For a view of the plaque dedicated to Jane Austen refer to picture SU4829 : Jane Austen Plaque, Winchester Cathedral.
