SU4829 : Winchester Cathedral

taken 4 years ago, near to Winchester, Hampshire, Great Britain

Winchester Cathedral
Winchester Cathedral
The site of Winchester Cathedral was believed to be a Roman Villa that was replaced by a Saxon Minster. This was replaced by the Norman Cathedral which forms the present building. Originally the tower was much higher but as the ground is soft it collapsed in 1107 it was rebuilt with the present modest height. It probably once supported a steeple but this was never replaced. For a view of the West fascia refer to picture SU4829 : Winchester Cathedral, West Fascia.
