The closer you look, the less substantial it is. On current maps (2013) at 1:250000 this is shown as a narrow road connecting to the A66. At 1:50000, it's a yellow road, apparently fenced off from the A66. At 1:25000, it's become just a track (with no evidence of a right of way) and at the larger OS Streetwiew scale, it has vanished completely. None of the OS maps show it as what the signposts either end indicate - a public bridleway. It used to be a public road, giving access to Carkin Moor Farm and Warrener House directly off the A66, but when the main road was dualled, it would have been too dangerous a turn (especially for westbound traffic), so it was down-graded. There are now double sets of gates at both ends, and the tarmac is breaking up and grassing over.
