Rochester Cathedral: false gable
Rochester Cathedral: false gable
This is a curious feature, a gable as seen from the east end of the cathedral, but from the side it is clearly only a facade. One Cathedral Canon told us it was erected with a view to raising the roof line, but the money ran out; another told us it was all that was left of the original roof when it was removed to reduce the weight on a subsiding walls. Take your choice.
