NZ0108 : More of the same

Until a few years ago, the track where this shot was taken, despite the monotony of dark spruce, was a pleasant place for cross-country skiing (when it had snowed). The tall spruce trees either side (planted in the early fifties) provided both shelter form the wind and shade from the scorching sun (!), so the snow would lie deep and powdery for far longer than on nearby open fellside. In summer the dog could chase rabbits into the forest, so she had a good time too.

Now, many areas of the forest have been clear cut, as on the left. The area is regenerating forest, as on the right (indeed, there are many small seedling trees on the left - too small to see in this photograph) - but it is all the same spruce monoculture as before. To protect the young trees, the FC have invested in the huge expense of high fencing (to keep out deer), with chicken wire at the bottom (to keep out rabbits) and all the streams and ditches culverted with springy rubber mats covering the downstream ends (to stop the little blighters infiltrating through the pipes). It's a dismal scene, and no longer much fun for the dog, either !
