Esplanade House Porthcawl
Esplanade House Porthcawl
This site, facing the Bristol Channel, was previously occupied by the Esplanade Hotel, dating from the late 1880s. It was one of the finest buildings in Porthcawl, but fell into disrepair after closure in the 1990s. A decade later it was replaced by the building seen here. Although this 42-unit apartment block was one of six projects to win a Welsh Housing Design award in 2006, Esplanade House has been controversial locally, which illustrates the disparity between what architects and lay people consider to be a good design. Esplanade House is often referred to disparagingly by locals as "The Bottle Bank".
