The old town gate of Chepstow was part of the original thirteenth century castle and walls built by Roger Bigod. The gate itself has undergone a number of changes and alterations since, but this crest marks the work undertaken by Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester. The date is given as 1514, although most records list 1524 as the completion.

Following more work carried out by the local council, local artist Keith Underwood was commissioned to produce this recasting of the Earl's armorial bearings; they were unveiled in April 1986 by the Duke of Beaufort.
