Mines and Quarries
Mines and Quarries
It's astonishing to realise that in the 17th, 18th and part of the 19th centuries this was a hive of industrial activity. It started with the discovery of native silver (that is, filaments ofactual silver rather than silver ore) in 1606 and later of significant deposits of lead, zinc and other minerals deeper down. There was also quarrying of limestone to both north and south.
